Hazel dormice conservation

Hazel dormice are currently declining in the UK, and as such are listed as Vulnerable in the latest Mammal Society conservation assessment . This is despite heavy legal protection in both UK and EU legislation, that protects both individual dormice and the places they hibernate and rest. We are investigating how to possibly increase dormice populations and ranges through forest management. The aim is to identify techniques that would increase the habitat suitability of UK forests, allowing dormice to reach higher numbers and to expand in their range.
